4 Reasons To Buy A Single Axle Flat Top Trailer Over A Double Axle

Letitia Thomas

Flat-top trailers provide an ideal way to haul large or awkward loads behind your vehicle, but some drivers find it tough to identify the right type to meet their needs. Probably the most fundamental decision will be between a single-axle flat-top trailer or a double-axle flat-top trailer.

Both have their own benefits and drawbacks, and the double axle is going to be better if you need to carry particularly heavy loads. However, most drivers will find themselves better off with a single-axle flat top, and here are just four reasons why.

1. Lower Weight

By their very nature, single-axle flat-top trailers are lighter than double-axles. This is partly because they are generally smaller and partly because they have fewer parts. That's ideal for many drivers since pulling a lighter trailer is going to save on fuel and reduce wear and tear on the vehicle itself. More importantly, your vehicle will only be rated to tow so much, and it makes sense to save the weight allowance for cargo rather than using too much on a heavier trailer than you need.

2. Less Expensive

Opting for a single-axle flat-top trailer over a double axle doesn't just help you save when it comes to fuel costs. You should also find yourself spending less initially since single-axle trailers are generally much less expensive than equivalent double-axles. This means you can either save the money or put it towards trailer accessories that might have been out of your budget when opting for a double-axle trailer.

3. Easier To Handle

Many drivers will be a little worried when they first start driving their vehicle with the new flat-top trailer attached. However, you can make things much easier on yourself by opting for a single-axle model. They are considerably more manoeuvrable and generally boast shorter stopping distances. This will be particularly important if you often find yourself driving in cramped or crowded areas or if you're worried about parking in tight spots.

4. Reduced Maintenance

Having a double axle might sound nice at first, but it's worth keeping in mind that having additional wheels, bearings, tyres and so on means there are more things that can potentially break. As such, you'll often have to spend more time and money maintaining your trailer if you opt for a double-axle flat top over a relatively simple single axle. That means everything from spending longer checking things over to more frequent repairs.
